Ok like logically I had some issues with Waterworld, like how can that much water show up? Even if all the polar icecaps did melt we'd still have dry land, it isn't enough to cover it all up. That and this one place with horses and... how did it get so high up compared to everything else? There's a lot of things in the movie that you have to overlook and think maybe this is just another planet that we are just calling earth so you can ignore that for the sake of the story. However, to me that ending was happy... How was it sad?
Let's just put it this way, I've been left a lot. Both the Waterworld ending and the Dragon Tattoo ending were very symbolic of "disposable people" endings. The people who formed relationships and bonds with characters who had already been treated like disposable people turned right around and bailed on them as if the relationships they forged were meaningless... which ultimately states that the person is still disposable. As a foster kid myself, I related too well with the people being bailed on, I suppose, and not well enough with the people callously bailing.
