Subversion of tropes, or at least understanding of which ones make people want to throw the book down in anger, then careful avoidance. There's a thread for it....let me search. There's nothing really wrong with tropes, but for those who read a lot of fantasy, it can get really old to always read about, say a peasant boy who discovers he has great powers and picks up advanced skills very quickly, saves the world, and gets the girl.
Be creative.
Much of the other things that make a good book are the same across genres--good character development (three-dimensional characters), lots of conflict, a satisfying ending (be it happy, sad, or conflicted), etc. Think about what you love from the books you read and keep those things in mind when you write.
