Well, you know, we see things through the lens of our experiences. I think he could have easily fished for a living and then not only have had his family, but his sea, too. I think him sleeping with the woman he couldn't miss was falling in love with him and thus cementing the bond further, and then leaving, was irresponsible and even cruel. Then again, many foster families demand that you bond with them, and once you finally do, they throw you out with the bathwater, so... lens of my own experiences. In the Dragon tattoo, the foster girl falls in love with the guy helping her. She even goes so far as to remember the jacket that had so much meaning to him. In the end, she buys him a jacket like the one he had such fond memories of... but arrives to see him leaving with his married (not to him) girlfriend on his arm, them laughing together and her (the girl) completely forgotten despite their bonding and the sweet sexual scenes in which he shows her tenderness she hasn't gotten anywhere else. So she throws the jacket in the trash bin and rides away, and we see the jacket lying there discarded, just like her hope of being loved. After all, like her, it was disposable. It's just a jacket, and she's just a foster kid.
