I like characters that are compelling, and I don't like cope out endings. If a character has a lot of bad things happen to them they can be hopeful in the end but not everything is coming up roses, because to me that's unrealistic. Go where your plot demands you to go, not where you think other people would like it to go because by trying to please everyone you'll only end up being disappointed yourself. If you are writing a fantasy that's supposed to be believable make me believe it, paint your world in words and bring it to life. You can have the most fantastical things in fantasy books still come across as real if you describe them well. (Not like she held a dragon made of water in her hand, more like she held a dragon made of water with no wings and when she touches it ripples move inside it like she was skipping a stone on the surface of a pond. Just be descriptive and you'll be fine. ^__^)
